Rt. 29 Intersection Redesign

Project Overview

The goal of this project is to improve the overall safety, driving routes, and traffic flow of State Route 29, County Route 579 Sanhican Drive, and adjacent areas. There are three main target areas for the project. The first, Project Area 1, is the roundabout at State Route 29 and Sanhican Drive. The second, Project Area 2, is the T-intersection of County Route 579 and Hilvista Boulevard, located just North of the targeted roundabout. The final area for redesign, Project Area 3, are the intersections of Sanhican Drive and West State Street along with Edgewood Avenue and Bruce Park Drive. The project team will work diligently to redesign these intersections for the benefit of all drivers in this area with hopes to create an overall better travelling environment.

Project Area 1 is the State Route 29 and Sanhican Drive roundabout redesign. Traffic data collection and analysis will be performed. Synchro models, along with traffic flow data graphs, will be created during this process. The focus for this area is to decrease traffic build up and to allow for better travel time through the intersection. Team members Rachel and Mark will work together in order to generate redesign layouts to optimize the intersection. These team members will also work with the rest of the group in connection to traffic analysis and the impacts of traffic flow to and from the other intersections involved within the project.

Project Area 2 is the intersection of Sullivan Way and Hilvista Boulevard. The focus of this area is to design a safer more efficient intersection between these two roadways. Vertical and horizontal sight distance and overall layout of the intersection will be examined for possible solutions. Traffic data will be collected and will be analyzed along with multiple redesigns using Synchro. Nick Chiavoni will be focusing on this portion of the project and will provide information to team members working on redesigning intersections in the surrounding area.

Project Area 3 highlights the intersection of Edgewood Avenue, Bruce Park Drive and West State Street. Traffic data collection and analysis will be performed, and Synchro models and traffic flow data graphs will be established for the intersection. West State Street and Edgewood Avenue are both two way roads while Bruce Park Drive is a one way residential road. The main goals set to improve the intersection are to remove some of the excess impervious pavement while refining some of the confusing turns due to poor stopping sight distance. Ryan will work on redesigning this intersection and will work with the rest of the team to analyze traffic flow to create a new design based off the traffic analysis from the other project areas.

The team this month made significant progress for the engineering drawings of the project areas. The team first put together an engineering drawing of the existing conditions of all three of the project areas, which included stationing and labeling of all of the surrounding area that was considered in the design. The team used the existing engineering...

The team began working on the final designs for all three project areas.  The designs are being drafted with Civil 3D following all NJDOT and FHWA design specifications.  The traffic and signal modeling is also being finalized in Synchro. The team started preparing figures for the design poster which will cover the final designs and important data...
